The Popular Nikon DSLR – D5000

Nikon DSLR

In April 2009, Nikon has launched their new entry-level DSLR, the D5000. Compared to the previous Nikon’s entry-level DSLR, for example D80, this camera has plenty of significant changes inside. Nikon switches to a CMOS sensor instead of the CCD it’s been using in its entry-level models.

According to the press release of the D5000, this new Nikon DSLR will be a perfect camera for the hobbyist and for family fun. Packed with features that make taking pictures easy and fun, this camera stands out above the competition with its unique vari-angle LCD monitor, which allows users to shoot easily from any angle they can imagine.

The design

Constructed of polycarbonate over stainless steel, the D5000 has dimensions approximately 5.0 x 4.1 x 3.1 inches and weighs approximately 560g without battery, memory card, body cap, or monitor cover. It feels plasticky, but not cheap — pretty typical for its price segment — although the SD slot cover does seem rather flimsier than usual.

The control layout is pretty typical, although Nikon seems to have eliminated more direct-access buttons than most products in its class and replaced them entirely with the interactive display. Through it, in combination with the back dial and multi selector, you can adjust aperture, shutter speed, image size and quality, white balance, ISO sensitivity, focus mode, Auto Focus area, metering, D-Lighting, Picture Control, exposure and flash compensation, and flash mode.
